Thriving schools. Thriving communities.

I am committed to working with families, children, and teachers to raise the bar for what it means for all kids to thrive.

For the past forty-two years, I have committed my life to making sure that schools and other community spaces are nurturing students’ capacity to reach their highest potential as participants in our democracy. I want all students to attain and celebrate their achievements.

I also want to be on a Board that encourages transparency and listens to what teachers, families, and children need before making decisions that significantly affect all stakeholders. I want to work collaboratively to gain the trust of teachers, families, and children. Thriving schools will ultimately lead to thriving communities.

VOTE NOV. 8

As a board member, I will continue to advocate for:

  • I would like to see more collaboration between teachers, administrators, and principals to ensure that teachers have a voice in the kinds of professional development that would benefit them and their students, including grade-level teacher learning communities. Shared decision-making also extends to agenda planning meetings, budget issues, transportation, and community partnerships.

  • I am especially committed to sharing (1) achievement data and graduation rates for different groups of students – students with special needs, students of color, and English Language Learners; (2) decision-making related to the referendum, contracts, compliance with the Department of Justice, and efficiency; and (3) Memos of Understanding with community partners that are providing after-school programs and supporting parent engagement.

  • This is as much about the Board as it is the administration, particularly regarding the importance of making decisions, developing action plans for improving achievement, and formulating impact goals. There should be an explicit line drawn between the actions the Board or administration take and what we want to accomplish.

  • A great deal of talk has focused on smaller class sizes, and this is especially important given the many needs that students have – academically and socio-emotionally. Students are coming to school a grade or two below where they should be in reading. Having more aides and professional staff in classrooms will enable students to grow and develop more readily than they are now. It is also important to make sure that teachers have access to professional development tailored to their needs and opportunities to collaborate in teacher learning communities.

  • I want to see our students thrive and I want to ensure that school is a safe space where they feel a sense of belonging, believe that their voice matters, and know that adults care deeply about their well-being – academically, socially, and emotionally. Soliciting ideas from students will also contribute to creating equitable and just classrooms in order to foster learning; developing classroom norms; encouraging students to express and respect their and others' feelings; and focusing on healing, a process that is at the heart of restorative justice, which I fully support.

  • I will continue to advocate for restorative justice. RJ holds a vision of justice as a “mutual responsibility” – as a quality of safety and trust that arises between adults and children in school. It is important that adults and children respect each other’s dignity, share a sense of responsibility for the welfare of the classroom and the school, and clarify what to expect from each other so that everyone can thrive. The practice of restorative justice entails an ongoing process of making decisions about what is just and unjust; identifying who is affected by an injustice; determining how to best redress the injustices (i.e., case building and preparation); and transforming the conditions that cause harm in the first place.

A proven track record
